How to Write for AI Search: The Answer-First Paragraph
Answer engines quote short passages that answer a question on their own. The 40 to 60 word answer block, five before-and-after rewrites, and a checklist to run before you publish.
An answer-first paragraph puts the direct answer to a heading's question in its first one or two sentences, in 40 to 60 words, with full names and at least one specific fact. Answer engines such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT lift passages like this because they still make sense on their own.
Most pages bury the answer under a warm-up. This guide shows the pattern that fixes it, five before-and-after rewrites you can copy, and the checks to run before you publish.
What answer engines lift from a page
An answer engine searches its index, pulls short passages that look relevant, and writes a reply from the ones it trusts most. It rarely uses a whole page. It uses a paragraph, a table row or a list. So the unit you are writing for is the section, and each section has to make sense if it is the only thing a reader sees.
Google says there are no special technical requirements for appearing in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. What you control is how clearly each section answers its question.
The 40 to 60 word answer block
Under every heading that asks a question, write one short paragraph that answers it completely. Five rules make it work:
- Answer in the first sentence. Yes, no, a number, a definition or a recommendation.
- Use full names for things: Google Business Profile, ChatGPT search, Search Console.
- Include one specific fact: a price range, a time, a date, a count or a named source.
- Leave out the warm-up. No sentence about why the question matters.
- Make it stand alone. Someone reading only this paragraph should understand it.
Five before-and-after rewrites
These are example rewrites for common business questions. Each before version is the kind of opening you find on real sites. Each after version follows the five rules.
Many business owners ask this question, and the answer depends on several factors. In today's market there are lots of ways to be found online, so let's look at the options.
Yes, for most businesses. Your Google Business Profile shows hours, reviews and location. Your website is where you explain services, prices and areas in detail, and AI answers often draw on both.
Why it works: It answers yes or no in the first two words, then gives the reason in plain terms.
Every patient is different, and the cost of treatment can vary for many reasons. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
A root canal at our clinic costs Rs X to Rs Y, depending on the tooth and whether you need a crown. The first consultation and X-ray cost Rs Z and are adjusted in the final bill.
Why it works: It gives a range and the two things that change it. Replace X, Y and Z with your real prices; an answer with no number rarely gets quoted.
As AI continues to change how people search, new ideas keep appearing. One of them is a file that some websites have started to add.
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short map of the site's most useful pages. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024.
Why it works: It defines the term in the first sentence and adds one sourced fact.
Both tools have their pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your specific needs and goals.
Zapier is quicker to set up and charges by the task. n8n takes more setup and can be self-hosted, which usually makes it cheaper once you run thousands of tasks a month.
Why it works: It names the deciding trade-off for each tool instead of saying it depends.
SEO is a long-term game, and patience is important. Results can vary a lot from site to site.
For competitive searches, most new pages take weeks to months to rank. Pages on established sites that answer a specific, long question can rank within days of being indexed.
Why it works: It gives a time range and the condition that shortens it.
Write headings as the questions people ask
An answer block only works if the heading above it is the real question. Find the wording in four places:
- Google autocomplete: type the start of the question and note how it finishes.
- People Also Ask boxes on the results page for your main topic.
- The Queries tab in Search Console, which shows the words people already used to find you.
- Your own sales calls, WhatsApp chats and emails. Customers ask the same five questions again and again.
Keep the customer's words. A heading that says "How much does a root canal cost" beats one that says "Our pricing philosophy".
Formats that lift cleanly
| Format | Use it when | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | The question starts with what is or what does | AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the work of… |
| Numbered steps | The question starts with how to | 1. Open Search Console. 2. Go to Performance… |
| Table | Two or more options are being compared | Columns for price, setup time and best fit |
| Short list | The answer has several parts of equal weight | Three reasons, one line each |
| FAQ | Short follow-up questions people ask next | Four to six questions, 40 to 80 word answers |
Where people overdo it
Every paragraph squeezed to 40 words. Use the answer block once per section, then write the detail normally.
Repeating the question inside the answer. "What is AEO? AEO is…" is fine once, tiring on every heading.
A FAQ section stuffed with questions nobody asks. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026, so the only reason to keep a question is that readers want the answer.
Cutting the depth that made the page worth reading. The answer block earns the quote, and the detail below it earns the click.
A pre-publish checklist
- Every question heading has a 40 to 60 word answer directly under it.
- Each answer starts with the answer, not with context.
- Each answer contains at least one specific fact or a named source.
- Comparisons are in a table and processes are in numbered steps.
- The page passes the AI Writing Tells Checker, so nothing reads like filler.
- A named author and an updated date are visible at the top.
Questions people ask
Does answering first lower time on page?
Sometimes, for readers who only needed the short answer. Those readers would have left anyway. Readers with a harder problem keep going, and the clear answer makes them trust the rest of the page.
Should every heading be a question?
No. Use questions where people really ask them. Steps and comparisons can have plain headings like "Step 2: verify the profile".
Does this help with ChatGPT and Perplexity too?
Yes. All answer engines work from passages, so a section that answers cleanly is easier for any of them to use. Which sites they trust still differs from engine to engine.
How long should the answer be?
Aim for 40 to 60 words. Shorter answers often lack the condition that makes them accurate, and longer ones get trimmed or skipped.
