What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization Explained

Quick answer

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It is the work of getting your business named, cited and linked inside answers that generative AI writes, in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.

It builds on SEO and adds three things: clear entity data about who you are, passages that are easy to quote, and mentions on the sites these engines already read.

Where the term came from

The name comes from a research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues from Princeton University, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi. It was first posted to arXiv on 16 November 2023 and accepted at the KDD conference in 2024. The team built a benchmark of 10,000 queries, called GEO-bench, and tested nine ways of rewriting a source page.

How GEO differs from SEO

Classic SEO aims for a position in a list of ten links. A generative answer has no fixed positions. The engine reads several sources, writes one reply and decides which brands to mention and which pages to link.

Three things follow from that:

  • Being mentioned counts, even without a click. A brand named in the answer gets remembered.
  • Other sites matter more. Engines lean on reviews, forums, YouTube, directories and press when they describe you. A study by Averi in March 2026 found only 11% overlap between the domains ChatGPT and Perplexity cite, so each engine has to be earned on its own.
  • You measure it with prompts. You ask the engines the questions your customers ask and record who gets named.

A worked example

Ask an AI engine "best interior designer in Ludhiana for a 3BHK" and it will usually name a handful of studios. To build that list it reads Google Business Profiles and their reviews, local lists and articles, and the studios' own pages. A studio whose site states its services and areas in plain sentences, and which is mentioned on a few local lists, gives the engine plenty to work with. A studio with a beautiful portfolio, a thin site and no mentions gives it almost nothing.

Three GEO fixes you can make this week

  1. Make your name, address, services and founder details match everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  2. Rewrite the first paragraph of your main service page so it answers "what do you do, for whom, and where" in under 60 words.
  3. Add one sourced number or one real example to each main page. The GEO paper found statistics and citations made the biggest difference.

Common confusions

!

GEO doesn't replace SEO. AI engines pull most of their sources from pages that already rank or are already well known.

!

Ads can appear above or inside some AI answers, but the brands and sources an answer names on its own can't be bought. That part is earned.

!

GEO and AEO are used loosely and often mean the same job. On this site, AEO means writing pages that get quoted, and GEO means the wider work on your brand.

How a brand earns a mention

A generative engine names the brands it can describe with confidence.

Confidence comes from four places, and a business controls three of them directly.

GEO work, week by week

GEO is a maintenance habit more than a project.

A simple weekly rhythm covers most of it for a small business.

Questions people ask

Is GEO the same as SEO with a new name?

They share foundations and differ in the target. SEO earns rankings and clicks on a results page. GEO earns mentions and citations inside an answer an engine writes, which a reader may never click past.

Can a business do GEO without a website?

Profiles and mentions carry some weight, and a website carries the facts in the business’s own words. Engines cite owned pages heavily, so a clear site remains the strongest GEO asset a business owns.

How is GEO measured?

With a fixed set of prompts run on a schedule, scored for mentions and citations, the method this site’s Lab uses in its AI visibility experiment. One-off checks show anecdotes. A dated series shows movement.

Does GEO replace reviews and local SEO?

No. Reviews, profiles and local pages are among the raw materials engines read. GEO organises how a business presents itself across all of them, so the answer an engine writes comes out right.
