What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the work of shaping a page so that an answer engine can lift a short, correct answer from it and credit your site.
Answer engines are tools that reply to a question instead of handing you a list of links: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants.
A plain example
Someone types "what is a service area business?" One page opens its section with a direct one-sentence answer. Another page opens with three sentences about why local search matters. The first page hands the engine something it can quote. The second makes it dig, and it usually picks someone else.
Local search has changed a lot in recent years, and every business owner wants to be found by more customers online. Before we explain service areas, let's look at why this matters…
A service area business serves customers at their location, like a plumber or a mobile car wash, and can hide its street address on Google Business Profile.
How AEO works
An answer engine searches its index, pulls passages that look relevant, and writes a reply from the ones it trusts most. Your job is to make your passage the easiest one to use. In practice that means:
- An answer of 40 to 60 words right under the heading that asks the question.
- Headings written the way people ask, taken from autocomplete, People Also Ask and real client calls.
- Definitions, numbered steps and tables, because they still make sense when lifted out of the page.
- Full names for things ("Google Business Profile", where a lazy draft says "your profile").
- A named author, a visible date and a source for every number.
- Structured data such as FAQPage and HowTo. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026, but the markup still helps machines read the page.
Why it matters for a business
When the answer is printed on the results page, fewer people click. The clicks that remain go mostly to the sources the answer names. If your page is the one quoted, you keep the visit and you get the credit. If it isn't, a competitor's sentence answers your customer's question.
Where the term came from
People started saying AEO in the featured snippet and voice search years, when Google began printing one answer above the results and smart speakers read a single reply aloud. AI answers made the idea mainstream, because now almost every search engine writes replies.
Common confusions
There is no AEO ranking system inside Google. AEO is ordinary SEO work aimed at the answer layer, and pages that don't rank rarely get quoted.
AEO and GEO overlap a lot. AEO is mostly about how a single page is written. GEO also covers your brand across the web: mentions, reviews, profiles and entity data.
A FAQ block at the bottom of a page is useful, but AEO applies to every section, starting with the first paragraph.
AEO, step by step
AEO work follows the path an answer engine takes through a page.
Each step below names that path in plain words, so a business owner can check a page against it without tools.
What a liftable answer looks like
The same fact can be written in a way an engine can lift, or buried in a way it cannot.
This example is invented for this page, and it shows the difference in one paragraph.
| Version | The paragraph |
|---|---|
| Buried | Welcome to our clinic page. We offer many treatments with modern equipment and caring staff, and our prices are competitive for the quality we provide across all our services. |
| Liftable | A root canal at Bright Smile Dental in Ludhiana costs from the clinic’s published price list, which states the price by tooth type, with the crown charged separately where one is needed. |
AEO on one service page, worked through
Take a single service page, say a dental clinic page about teeth whitening, and run AEO thinking over it from top to bottom. The page stops describing the clinic in general terms and starts answering the exact questions a patient asks an AI assistant before booking.
The answer block
The first lines answer the page question directly: what whitening does, who it suits, what it costs in a range, and how long it takes. An engine can lift this block whole.
Proof and specifics
The middle carries the details engines quote: the method used, session length, sensitivity handling, and aftercare. Specifics beat adjectives at this layer.
The booking bridge
The close connects the answer to an action: which consultation to book, what happens at it, and how to reach the clinic. Answers that end in a next step convert.
What to measure in the first 60 days
AEO results show up in odd places before they show up as traffic. Watch these signals in order, and give the work two months before judging it.
| Signal | Where you see it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| AI citations | Ask the main engines your key questions weekly | Whether your pages enter the answer set at all |
| Branded search volume | Search Console queries with your name | AI mentions often surface first as people searching your name |
| Key page impressions | Search Console, page level | Whether answer-ready pages get surfaced more |
| Enquiry quality | Your inbox and call log | AI-referred visitors usually arrive pre-sold and ask sharper questions |
AEO mistakes that waste the effort
Rewriting everything at once. Start with the five pages closest to money. Add answer blocks, specifics and FAQs there first, measure, then widen. A site-wide rewrite delays learning by months.
Two more traps show up often. Writing answers so generic that any competitor could carry the same text gives engines no reason to pick you. And hiding prices behind “call for a quote” on every page starves answers of the one detail users ask for most.
Ranges and starting prices answer the question while keeping room for a real quote.
Your first AEO afternoon
- List five questions. Write the five questions customers ask before buying, in their words.
- Find the matching pages. One page per question. Note which page currently answers it best.
- Add the answer block. Forty to sixty words at the top of each page answering the question directly.
- Add one specific. A price range, a time, a material, a number. One per page is enough for today.
- Ask the engines. Put each question to two AI assistants and note who gets cited. That is your baseline.
Questions people ask
Is AEO a replacement for SEO?
No. AEO builds on the same foundations as SEO: a crawlable site, clear pages and trustworthy facts. It adds one discipline on top, writing answers that an engine can lift and credit word for word.
How long does AEO take to show results?
A page can be picked up as a source within days of a change, and a pattern worth trusting takes a few months of tracking. Measure with a fixed prompt set, the way this site’s Lab experiment does.
Does AEO work for small local businesses?
Yes, and local questions are where answer engines are used most heavily. A complete Business Profile, review answers and service pages with plain facts give a local business its best route into AI answers.
What is the first AEO fix on an existing page?
Rewrite the opening under each heading so it answers the heading’s question in two or three sentences. That single change makes the page liftable, and every later improvement builds on it.
